Disadvantages of
Working At Home
The current economic downturn has meant that no career
is safe. For this reason working from home or ‘going
it alone’ is becoming increasingly popular. There
are a lot of advantages to working from home, but there
are also plenty of disadvantages that you might want
to consider first.
Whilst you may be extremely good at your current profession,
it may be hard to convert that into a home based business.
For example, if you are a doctor, you’ll be looking
to provide mobile health care. This is an extremely
hard business to get into and may not provide the stability
you require. On the other hand, freelance jobs such
as graphic designing, writing and artistic jobs all
work really well as home based businesses, and work
will never dry up.
If you have children then you might find that working
from home saves you quite a lot of cash on daycare.
On the other hand if you don’t you might find
yourself impulse buying on a regular basis. A lot of
people do this as they feel like they need a sudden
rush as they are not communicating with other individuals.
Distractions are the hardest part of working from
home. How will you tell yourself that you need to work
for 8 hours straight? Can you resist the temptation
of flicking the TV on to watch your favorite show? Your
working on the internet so how tempted are you to play
your favorite game online? This can actually reduce
the amount of money you make in comparison with your
current salaried job.
Giving yourself the push to work is the hard part.
Finding the work should not really be the problem. The
problem is being tempted to just sit back and relax
and live ‘the high life’. I’ll be
honest, I’ve gone through a full week where I
had jobs lined up but I just didn’t have the self
motivation to complete them. Even if you do have the
motivation to get moving, sometimes you’ll be
working at a snails pace as your mind is simply elsewhere!
A really important point is feeling isolated. You
won’t come into contact with many people working
from home, so it can get incredibly boring extremely
quickly. You need to find ways to deal with boredom
and the frustration of working alone, otherwise you’ll
have no chance of succeeding. Good luck with your new
career!
